Should you own more than one domain name?

Today in the blogging class, the question arose about whether one should own more than one domain name, pointing to the same website.

The answer is simple:

Unless:

You want to prevent others from buying a particular variation of your domain – like buying both a .com and a .ca
You have a different spelling (or misspelling) of your name (or domain) – like lindasmith.ca vs lyndasmith.ca
You want to own your own name as a domain so that you can use it in the future – note that you can always direct this domain to your website even if you’re not using it otherwise

Owning a bunch of domains doesn’t give you any advantage as far as search engines are concerned – it’s only the one in the address bar (main domain) that matters!

Two of our students came to use through Google Searches. We must be doing something right!

I will be teaching over two days, as follows:

Thursday, November 18th

2pm-5pm: Adwords

I am in the midst of teaching a group of four people from a variety of businesses and backgrounds about blogging!

Blogging on a Gorgeous Sunny Day in Vancouver… in December!

Today I had the privilege of teaching the Reachd.com Blogging class from the 4th floor of 1367 West Broadway – in a boardroom with a stunning view of Downtown Vancouver, the north shore mountains, and even a peek-a-boo water view. I took a couple of pictures from the boardroom before we started, and it sure looks gorgeous out there!

In today’s class, we have Realtor Aleya Bhaloo and BlackBerry Trainer Darci LaRocque.

It’s great to have people from different industries in this class so that we can benefit from each others’ experiences!

In today’s Reachd.com blogging class we compared blogging to working out. If you only do it once in a while, aimlessly, you and your business won’t get much out of it. However, if you set yourself a plan, and blog regularly, you will probably be more fit… or at least gain more readers.
